Tamara Schwarz Wins Point of Light Award For Trinity Community Park
Please join us in congratulating our very own Tamara Schwarz for receiving the Daily Point of Light award.
Trinity Lutheran Church in Monument, Colorado, is committed to inclusivity for all people and that doesn’t stop at the sanctuary doors. It extends to the entire community and one of the great examples is our very own Tamara Schwarz whose vision for creating Trinity Community Park (TCP) helped our congregation create a place of fun and welcome for many families who didn’t have an accessible park. TCP is an ADA-compliant and fully inclusive space. It’s also a testament to what happens when a community pulls together around a vision of action and faith to serve others.
That vision came together under Tamara’s passionate leadership and she was just nationally recognized by the Daily Point of Light Award, celebrating her tireless dedication to design and build a park that welcomes people of all ages and abilities.
A Dream That Sparked a Movement
The inspiration for TCP came in 2021 when Tamara and her husband started brainstorming about ways to use the COVID relief fund to help other people. They first thought that rebuilding Trinity Lutheran Church’s old playground into a new, more kid-friendly playground would be a great project. But as they researched option, they realized there wasn’t a park anywhere in the area at that time that was aimed at full accessibility.
The original kids playground was built decades ago as a memorial for a member family but like all playgrounds, time had taken it’s toll and it had become unsafe and outdated. Tamara spearheaded an effort to not only replace the current playground, but to build something far greater.
Today, TCP is the first ADA-compliant park in Monument thanks to Tamara’s leadership and the work and donations of many in the greater Monument area. It features specialized equipment like a wheelchair-accessible merry-go-round, a sensory-friendly trampoline, shaded pavilions for those sensitive to sunlight, and a lot more. (
Reaching the Community, One Phase at a Time
The park now serves over 13,500 familes, including 2,000 with loved ones living with differing abilities. Tamara’s vision quickly grew into multiple phases as more and more of the surrounding community saw the importance of creating a space where everyone can have fun together.
Going beyond just safety and accessibility, the park is intentionally designed to create meaningful interactions between people of differing abilities. It welcomes wheelchair users, the elderly, children with a range of special needs and anyone else who enjoys a spacious, modern park with great views.
Thanks to Tamara’s leadership and constant fundraising, the park continues to grow through multiple phases. She has already raised over $600,000 and the park has become an inspiration for inclusive design in other communities.
