Congratulations to Our Own Dave Ross for KOAA News 5 Lighthouse Award

Trinity Lutheran Church of Monument is proud to share the inspiring story of our member, Dave Ross, who has recently been honored with the prestigious Lighthouse Award for his exceptional contributions to Project Healing Waters. This award recognizes individuals who go above and beyond to make a positive impact in their communities, and Dave’s dedication to helping veterans is a shining example of this spirit.

A Lifeline for Veterans

Dave Ross, a former B-52 pilot who served in Operation Desert Storm, has dedicated his time and energy to supporting veterans and active-duty military personnel through Project Healing Waters, a non-profit organization that uses fly fishing as a therapeutic tool. The program aims to help those coping with the often invisible wounds of service, such as PTSD and other disabilities.

One of the most poignant stories highlighting Dave’s impact comes from Bob McCook, a retired Navy chief warrant officer. Bob faced a dark period in his life, having even mapped out a plan for his own demise. However, everything changed when he participated in a fly fishing trip organized by Project Healing Waters, where he met Dave. Bob credits Dave with saving his life, stating, “I come to this and I’m clammed up and I walk in and (Ross) is there, I’m good.”

Building Connections Through Fly Fishing

Dave’s journey with Project Healing Waters began with cooking for daylong fishing trips across southern Colorado. His commitment quickly grew as he took on more responsibilities, including coordinating overnight trips and fundraising efforts. His wife, Sue, a retired Air Force pilot, nominated him for the Lighthouse Award, recognizing the countless hours he dedicates to ensuring that every trip is successful and that participants receive the support they need.

The therapeutic nature of fly fishing is profound. As Dave explains, “It’s a detailed sport, so everything you do you have to focus on. That focus is what gets them out of their mind and puts them on the river.” This focus not only helps veterans engage with nature but also fosters camaraderie among participants, creating a supportive community.

A Community of Support

Project Healing Waters has nearly 200 chapters across the United States, and its mission has touched the lives of many veterans. The organization started in 2005, initially serving wounded service members at Walter Reed Army Medical Center. Today, it continues to provide hope and healing to those who have served our country.

Dave’s recognition with the Lighthouse Award is not just a personal achievement; it reflects the collective effort of all those involved in Project Healing Waters. His selfless service exemplifies the values we hold dear at Trinity Lutheran Church—compassion, community, and commitment to helping others.

As we celebrate Dave’s accomplishments, let us also remember the importance of supporting our veterans and the organizations that work tirelessly to assist them. We encourage everyone to learn more about Project Healing Waters and consider how you can contribute to this vital cause.

Congratulations, Dave Ross, on this well-deserved honor! Your dedication to serving others is an inspiration to us all.
